In a rather weird casting choice, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is all set to play Grammy-winning musician “Weird Al” Yankovic in a biopic film. Titled WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story the upcoming film will follow the iconic career of the star. The film will be written by Yankovic himself and directed by Eric Appel. Roku announced the news in a statement that revealed production on the Roku original film will begin in Los Angeles in February this year.

Daniel Radcliffe who was last seen in Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts, will essay the titular role in what is being described as a film that explores “every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon” to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle,” as per Roku’s press release.

Talking about WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story, the musician said, “When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule,” said Yankovic. “And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”

The upcoming Weird Al biopic is yet another unexpected addition to Daniel Radcliffe’s filmography that’s full of radical departures from his Harry Potter role. Between Swiss Army Man (a truly challenging role considering he played a farting corpse), The Woman In Black, Kill Your Darlings, Victor Frankenstein, Now You See Me 2 and more. His latest venture, however, is daring in terms of casting and while both stars are pop culture icons of a different kind, there’s no telling how their combined project looks like.

Biopics are all the rage at the moment with the recent success of tick, tick… BOOM! starring Andrew Garfield, the upcoming Pam and Tommy series starring Sebastian Stan and Lily James and the recent casting announcement of Rooney Mara’s perfect casting as Audrey Hepburn. It remains to be seen if WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story joins the list.
