Dadasaheb Phalke’s Grandson Slams SS Rajamouli’s Biopic, Praises Aamir Khan’s Approach: ‘He Never Contacted…’

Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani delighted fans with the unexpected announcement of their reunion after 11 years for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, widely regarded as the ‘father of Indian cinema.’ Shortly after, reports surfaced that SS Rajamouli had also revealed plans for a Phalke biopic in 2023, with rumors suggesting Jr NTR might take on the lead role.

In a conversation with Amar Ujala, Phalke’s grandson Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar voiced his dissatisfaction with Rajamouli. The publication reported that Chandrashekar ‘expressed displeasure’ when questioned about Rajamouli’s potential biopic, tentatively titled Made in India. He revealed that the filmmaker had never reached out to him, stating, “I have been hearing discussions about Rajamouli’s project, but he never contacted me for it. No one spoke to me on behalf of Rajamouli. If someone is making a film on Phalke ji, then at least the family should be talked to. The family cannot be ignored, it’s we who know the real stories.”

In contrast, Chandrashekar, though caught off guard, expressed joy upon learning that Aamir and Rajkumar were involved in their biopic, noting that their assistant producer, Hindukush Bharadwaj, had been in contact with him for three years. “Aamir-Hirani’s team worked hard to gain trust. Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s project was a surprise for me too. I just got to know that they have tied up, but their assistant producer, Hindukush Bhardwaj, has been in touch with me for the last three years. He used to come to meet me again and again, do research, and ask for details. I told him clearly, you guys are working honestly, you go ahead, I have no objection,” he said. He further emphasized that Aamir-Rajkumar’s team ‘worked hard to gain our trust.’

Chandrashekar was particularly pleased with Aamir taking on the role of Phalke, describing him as a ‘serious fellow’ who works with ‘honesty.’ He also shared his view that Vidya Balan should be cast as his grandmother, Saraswatibai Phalke, in the film. Aamir and Rajkumar are slated to begin preparations for the biopic following the release of Sitaare Zameen Par. Meanwhile, Rajamouli’s Made in India, announced in 2023, is being supported by Varun Gupta and SS Karthikeya’s Max Studios and Showing Business.
