Twitter’s former boss and co-founder Jack Dorsey is on his side quest of building apps for a more niche demography. His latest endeavor is a bluetooth based messaging app dubbed the ‘Bitchat.’ The app does not require either the internet or the Wi-Fi or even a cell service to connect. The messaging service hops from peer-to-peer via bluetooth transmission with a range of up to 300 meters. In his tweet post the 48-year-old CEO of Square stated,
“my weekend project to learn about bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store and forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things.”
He added,
“bitchat: bluetooth mesh chat…IRC vibes.”
In a follow up tweet Dorsey wrote, “Oops. TestFlight full (10,000 people). The app is still in review for full release.”
One user remarked, “This is fascinating – mesh networks are perfect for resilient communication. The store-and-forward approach reminds me of early packet radio networks. What’s particularly interesting is how this could enable truly decentralized communication during network outages or in areas with poor infrastructure.” The user asked, “Are you planning to implement any routing optimization algorithms, or keeping it simple with basic flooding protocols?” The billionaire replied, “eventually.”

Meanwhile reactions poured in with netizens taking a jibe at the project. One user quipped, “This will be used almost entirely for drug deals and prostitution in crowded third world favela situations.” Sharing screengrabs of BlueChat, another took a dig, “30 years too late.” “Imagine texting someone you are in speaking range with…dystopian,” a third user remarked. Yet another user wrote, “Everyone is going to bitchat each other.” Few users pleaded, “Just tired of more chat apps.” Netizens also shared memes on bitchat.
