Apple is among the few tech giants that have yet to enter the foldable market, but according to a recent rumor, the corporation is not only developing a gadget but also trying out different methods to make it stand apart. The information comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that Apple is testing a foldable smartphone with an e-ink display with color projection as the secondary screen.

Reportedly, Kuo believes that having an e-ink display will allow Apple to provide a unique experience while still preserving the smartphone’s battery life due to its low power usage. He even predicts that in the future, the e-ink panel would be the primary screen for foldable devices.

However, Apple’s decision to use an e-ink screen as its outside display raises further concerns regarding the device’s quality and app experience when compared to other foldable smartphones on the market, such as those from Samsung, Oppo, and Xiaomi.

Current tablet-sized foldable including Samsung, Oppo, Huawei, and Honor, on the other hand, must rely on Android, which has uneven support for large-screen devices. Apple’s foldable device is still a long way off. It’s worth noting that static content on e-ink displays uses very little power, making them ideal for presenting time, alerts, and other information without sacrificing battery life.

They could, however, be compared to the quality of LCD or AMOLED screens. Apple is slated to release its first foldable gadget in the next two to three years, so a lot may happen in between when people get their hands on it.
