The list of issues surrounding Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup continues to grow, and the latest one has left long-time iPhone users puzzled. Apple has now officially acknowledged that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max do not support Night Mode in Portrait mode, a feature that has been standard on every Pro-level iPhone since 2020.

The confirmation comes through an Apple support document after months of user complaints across Reddit, social media, and Apple Support Communities. Many customers believed the absence of Night Mode in Portrait mode was a software glitch, but the company’s statement has now made it clear that the feature simply does not exist on this year’s Pro models.
A Surprising Downgrade for iPhone Photography
Night Mode has been one of Apple’s most heavily marketed camera features over the past several years. It extends exposure time in low-light environments, allowing the sensor to capture significantly more detail. Depending on lighting conditions, the exposure can vary from fractions of a second to several seconds. When combined with Portrait mode, Night Mode helps deliver brighter, sharper, and more accurate photos of people in dim settings.

This is why its removal has sparked frustration among users, especially since models from the iPhone 12 Pro to the iPhone 16 Pro all supported it. Apple has not offered an explanation for why the capability was dropped, raising questions about hardware constraints or deliberate design choices.
iPhone 17 Problems Continue to Pile Up
This is not the first controversy for the iPhone 17 series. Earlier this year, durability concerns spread rapidly after a stress-testing video by popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything showed visible chipping around the camera bump on the iPhone 17 Pro models. According to the creator, the anodised coating Apple used this year did not properly bond with the sharply curved metal edges, an issue that did not affect the previous titanium-framed iPhone 16 Pro lineup.
Shortly after launch, users also noticed deep scuff marks and scratches forming around the MagSafe ring on darker iPhone 17 units displayed in Apple retail stores, adding to concerns about durability and long-term wear.
Another controversy emerged when several customers claimed that their iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max devices slowly developed a pink or rose-gold tint, despite purchasing different colour variants. Photos shared online show noticeable shifts in colour tone over time, though Apple has not yet commented on the matter.
What’s Next for Apple?
With mounting complaints and a surprising omission in a marquee camera feature, pressure is increasing on Apple to clarify the reasoning behind its design choices for the iPhone 17 line. For now, users will have to accept that Night Mode Portrait photography is no longer an option, a change few expected in what was supposed to be Apple’s most advanced camera system yet.
