The Night Manager Season 2 Review: Tom Hiddleston Battles Nightmarish Past While On A New Mission

The much anticipated TV espionage masterpiece The Night Manager has finally returned with a second season after almost a decade. The show, for those who don’t know, is based on John le Carré’s 1993 espionage novel of the same name. David Farr adapted the book into a six-episode series in 2016. While there is no sequel to the original book, Farr had stated in an interview that he had gotten a dream which the night of le Carré’s passing, hinting that he should take the franchise ahead.

Now ahead of the first season’s 10-year anniversary, the makers have released its second season on Prime Video, taking ahead the story of Johnathan Pine who now goes by the alias Alex Goodwin. The story takes place nine years after Johnathan tricked Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) in Egypt and send him into the hands of his Syrian captors. With the latter dead, images of his dead body haunting the leading hero, Alex is now a low intelligence-officer with MI6.

Despite getting visions and nightmares about his time with Roper, and what all he had done to him haunting him, Pine sets out on a new mission – infiltrating a Colombian arms, with the help of Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone ) operation run by Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva). The focus, in the first three episodes of the series, which has released on Prime Video, is on how Pine builds his relations with Santos.

Ratings: 3/5

The makers have maintained the show’s pace. The background music which builds up when Hiddleston’s character is haunted by Roper, the camera work showcasing the urgency of a scene, the action sequences, and the toll it takes on Pine, the consequences he has to face given more importance.

Considering the makers have returned to the mini-series after almost a decade, I was a bit reluctant yet excited. Reluctant for going back to a show which had ended on a perfect note, wondering why a sequel was needed after 10-years, yet excited to watch Tom essay the role of Pine again. But, as it turns out the makers have maintained what they did in the 2016 series, not loosing their vision. It is a shame though that we don’t see much of the standout characters from season one.

All in all, The Night Manager season 2 is a good weekend-watch and we can’t wait to see what the makers have in store for the next three episodes.
