A man in Tamil Nadu was killed allegedly due to a malfunction of the four-wheeler’s summon mode that the original poster on Reddit stated was a Tata Harrier EV.
For the unversed, summon mode is a smart feature that allows a vehicle to automatically move forward or backward without manual intervention.
Per the viral post, the vehicle’s summon mode malfunctioned, leading to the death of the individual who is seen trying to get the car into a halt as it rolled along the slope outside the house. The video shows the man failing to get hold of the car’s control and stumbling. The car hit a cart on the opposite side of the street as witnesses of the tragedy rushed after the injured man.
Per a tweet by a person claiming to be the relative, the victim “was declared brain dead and passed away.” The user shared that the incident happened near Avinasi, Tiruppur, in Tamil Nadu.

Reactions poured in on social media, with netizens asking for stringent safety regulations, while others were skeptical about the alleged summon mode malfunction. A few users cast doubts on whether the vehicle was an EV. One user remarked, “This is why India needs strict EV safety regulations. Fancy features mean nothing if they put lives at risk.”
Sharing a clipping of the car’s manual, another user noted, “In their manual … it’s clearly mentioned that the Auto park will terminate when doors are open.”
A third user quipped, “Somehow human error is being passed on to machines.” Yet another user asked, “How did the summon feature work with the doors open? How did its cameras not warn the system about obstacles?”
