Breyer to retire; Tucker pushes neo-Nazi conspiracy on behalf of authoritarian leader

In the news today: Supreme Court Stephen Breyer has reportedly made the decision to retire at the end of the court’s current term; the decision would allow President Joe Biden to name a replacement while Democrats are in control of the Senate, foiling potential Republican plans to deny yet another court seat to a Democratic president. Another key insurrection figure loses the fight to hide his records from investigators. And Fox News’ Tucker Carlson again pulls neo-Nazi conspiracy theories into network television; this time, it is the neo-Nazi belief that prominent Jewish American George Soros is funding alleged plots to undermine western “civilization.”

The truth of Carlson’s attack is more pedestrian, however. Carlson has become a prominent American backer of Hungary’s far-right authoritarian leader, part of a broader support for authoritarian government, and Soros is not only a lifelong backer of European pro-democracy efforts but is a particular enemy of that Hungarian leader. Carlson’s attack on behalf of far-right authoritarianism, using the precise antisemitic conspiracy theories peddled by Nazi, neo-Nazi and other white supremacist groups, is consistent with the network’s pattern of allowing hosts to stoke conspiracy theories against named targets.

Previous network voices Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck both broadcast false conspiracy claims against named “liberal” enemies that were later targeted for assassinations by far-right domestic terrorists. Carlson knows precisely what he is doing—as do network executives.
