As theatres reopened to some major box office hits, the past year has been a big step towards taking movie-goers back to the big screen amidst the pandemic. 2021 saw some great films between Sardar Udham and Spider-Man: No Way Home so 2022 begins on a somewhat hopeful note. While the Omicron scare looms large, January is full of anticipated titles dropping on streaming platforms and in theatres. Major highlights include Gehraiyaan, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and more. Directed by Shakun Batra, the film is set to release on Amazon Prime Video. The first month of the year will also see the long-awaited theatrical release of Radhe Shyam, a period romance starring Prabhas. The Tragedy of Macbeth starring award-winning actors Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand will arrive on Apple TV+ after it opened to significant Oscar buzz. Some of the upcoming titles were delayed owing to the pandemic and for the most part, it looks like movie buffs will finally get their wait’s worth.

Here are some of the best movies to watch on streaming and in theatres in January 2022:

The Tender Bar

The Tender Bar is George Clooney’s eighth directorial. Based on J.R. Moehringer’s 2005 memoir of the same name, the film is a coming-of-age story set in the ’70s. Starring Ben Affleck, Lily Rabe and Christopher Lloyd, the film follows a young boy abandoned by his father, who seeks a father figure in his uncle Charlie (played by Affleck) and patrons at a bar in Long Island. The film is scripted by Willaim Monahan, the Oscar-winning writer of The Departed. Its star cast and feel-good plot make this an unmissable movie to watch this month.

Radhe Shyam

Featuring Bahubali star Prabhas alongside Pooja Hegde, Radhe Shyam written and directed by Radha Krishna Kumar is easily one of the most hotly anticipated Indian movies arriving in January 2022. The film, dubbed as a period romance will see Prabhas play Vikramaditya, while Hegde will play Prerana. This is their first film together and fans are excited to see their onscreen chemistry. While little is known about the plot, every poster and teaser we’ve seen so far promises a timeless love story and of course, Prabhas serving retro looks. Basically the kind of stuff that gets the crowd into theatres. While the most buzz-worthy Indian films have been postponed owing to the Omicron scare, so far the makers of Radhe Shyam have revealed that the film will have its theatrical release on time. However, that’s subject to change given the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

The synopsis of The Tragedy of Macbeth is enough to give one goosebumps, the good kind of course – Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand star in Joel Coen’s bold and fierce adaptation; a tale of murder, madness, ambition, and wrathful cunning. Two of the biggest, award-winning stars of our times – Washington and McDormand play husband and wife in the most exciting adaptation of William Shakespeare’s popular stage play. Shot fully in black and white, the Joel Coen directorial seems to set up a noir-ish vibe. So while there are multiple Macbeth adaptations across cultures, it will be interesting to see what the film can accomplish visually, to say the least. The A24 film which also casts Corey Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson and Harry Melling opened to rave reviews and expectedly sparked Oscar predictions.

Titane

Titane is a film that has been dubbed both bizarre and brilliant by critics. Written and directed by Julia Ducournau, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where he won the Palme d’Or, making Ducournau only the second female director to win the honour. The body horror film revolves around a woman who was injured in a car accident in her childhood and has a titanium plate fit inside her head. It casts Agathe Rousselle, Vincent Lindon in a shocking, genre-bending thriller. If you think that’s cryptic, the film’s logline simply reads, “A metal highly resistant to heat and corrosion, with high tensile strength alloys, often used in medical prostheses due to its pronounced biocompatibility.”

Attack

John Abraham, fresh off his triple role in Satyameva Jayate 2 which was a major dud of a film, will next be seen in Attack playing a super-soldier. The action drama will see the actor take on the role of a soldier, more of a lone ranger tasked with, no points for guessing – saving the country. In this case, it’s a hostage crisis. Judging from the teaser we’ve seen so far, it’s going to be an exposition-filled ride. The pacey thriller also casts Jacqueline Fernandes and Rakul Preet Singh in pivotal roles.
