‘Sex Education’: Emma Mackey Might Not Just Return After Season 3 And It’s Making Fans Emotional

Sex Education returned and how! Netflix recently dropped the highly-awaited third season from the popular, hit series and it’s been the talk of the town since. For all the right reasons obviously! No spoilers but if you’ve already binged through the series, like the majority of us, you know what I’m talking about! From the re-christening of Moordale Secondary School to Sex School to Asa Butterfield’s Otis and Emma Mackey’s Maeve having a shot at fixing what the deleted voicemail couldn’t, it’s bigger, better and bolder. That and a whole lot of sex! Inclusive and safe sex! All thanks to the groundwork that Otis and Maeve set by their clinic in the first two seasons. But while the third installment gave us a reunion of sorts, it could very well be the last of it.

Why? Because (a) the old loo is now demolished (hey, it’s in the trailer itself) and (b) Mackey might be saying goodbye to Maeve! That’s right; rumors are rife that the actress is exiting the show. In fact, in a recent interview, she even hinted about having mixed feelings as she grapples with “the series’ inevitable sell-by date”. Although, “It’s a gift to play that kind of character”, Mackey who is approaching her late twenties told Hunger, “It’s a complicated thing to me. Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast is phenomenal. I genuinely care about them all a lot and I made lifelong friends. We’ve kind of grown up together. But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can’t be 17 my whole life.”

She added about her character: “I think there’s something very powerful about her and I’m only sort of realising now, with a little bit of a distance, how much of an impact she has had on people.” But nothing takes away from the fact that there is logic and reason in her answer.

Now, it’s obviously not confirmed but that hasn’t stopped fans from taking to Twitter and expressing how they are not okay, trying to process the trauma of the thought of losing their favorite character. While some are still in denial are cracking jokes to make light of the situation, the rest are just trying to make peace with the rather sad news. Some are also making a case for Maeve and Aimes’ and can you blame them? See for yourself.

Well, if not Sex Education, Emma Mackey has other exciting projects in the line-up. She’s already starred in the Irish thriller The Winter Lake and now, she is all set to appear in the Agatha Christie feature Death on the Nile which stars Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal and others. She is also attached to a film called Emily and will be seen as Victorian novelist Emily Brontë. And here’s hoping the list keeps getting longer for we can’t have enough of her. Wbu?
