U.S. schools are helping Afghan refugee youth adapt, but challenges remain

Refugee youths go through unimaginable circumstances when they leave their homeland due to crisis or violence. According to the American Psychological Association, studies suggest that displaced children experience a multitude of stress factors connected to mental health issues, such as PTSD, anxiety, somatization, and traumatic grief. This can lead to external problems like difficulty with their studies or behavioral problems at school, which is why it is important for refugee youth to receive support beyond just assistance with learning English.  

The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest in California, with 226 public schools and other institutes serving more than 121,000 students in preschool through 12th grade. IRC partners with seven schools in the district—four middle schools and three high schools—based in City Heights and El Cajon, where more than 300 refugee students are enrolled, including those from Afghanistan. Since the areas have long been refugee resettlement hubs, refugees tend to have more support resources to access. Many of the youths that IRC serves are English learners and have gaps in their education.

“Our school systems just aren’t necessarily built to help those youths on their own,” Johnson said. For schools that do not have a history of receiving many refugees, he added that “their programs aren’t necessarily built for that kind of continuum of enrollment, where refugee resettlement comes in anytime a year and the teacher has to be prepared and … trained in how to help that student while continuing to teach and build the skills of all the other students.”

Through its Refugee Education, Acculturation, Civic Engagement, and Health program (REACH), IRC provides students wrap-around services as they navigate the U.S. education system. In addition to services like tutoring and college application support, REACH offers social and emotional development programs to help affected refugee youths deal with trauma. This includes things like helping them learn how to regulate their emotions and cultivating their socialization skills through team sports.

Eighteen-year-old Wahida Hamdard is a freshman at San Diego State University. She resettled with her family in the U.S. in 2016, after they had left Afghanistan and relocated to India as refugees for several years. Hamdard enjoys her studies now but shared that it was a tough adjustment in the beginning.

“Language is the main thing. Not being able to understand what your teachers are saying, not being able to talk to your classmates was very difficult,” she said, noting that mastering basic computer skills was another big challenge early on. During her high school years in El Cajon, she had access to tutoring services and joined the Peacemakers, a youth development program under IRC. The program’s diversity of students—many of whom come from other countries and share similar backgrounds—put Hamdard at ease.

“[The Peacemakers program] was like my comfort zone,” recalled Hamdard, who hopes to one day work with the U.N. to help other refugees. “It was the only place where I could freely express myself because I didn’t think anybody was judging me.”

On the other side of the country, Virginia’s Fairfax County has a similar history of supporting refugees and immigrants. As the tenth-largest school district in the U.S., the Fairfax Public School District serves more than 178,000 students through grade 12, with 200 languages spoken among them. Since August, about 206 refugee students from Afghanistan have enrolled in the school district, 10 of whom are enrolled at Annandale High School.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (or ESOL) program at Annandale, which has a student body that is majority students of color, is the school’s largest faculty department. Many students who arrive at Annandale are refugees and immigrants from countries including Guatemala, Sudan, China, and Afghanistan. These students receive a subject curriculum that is tailored to English learners, in addition to English language and life skills development classes. They are also supported by “peer-helpers,” students assigned to help newly arrived students to establish a routine and get familiarized with the facilities.

Peer-to-peer empowerment is a key element of Annandale’s support system for incoming Afghan youths. Afghan students who have resettled at the school have even begun creating a guidebook to help the next cohort of students adjust.

“It’s been a really pleasant surprise,” said Meredith Hedrick, an ESOL instructor who chairs the department. “These kids … who are taking the lead, they’ve only been here for a year, and they came during COVID. It’s pretty incredible to have that quick of a leadership position emerge,” she noted. But schools like Annandale, where rich support programs for refugee students exist, still encounter challenges in supporting incoming students.

“Every new student is a new desk, a new computer, a new person in the lunchroom,” Hedrick continued. “So it’s not just the teachers who are impacted, but the custodian, the technology office. Everyone is working so hard to just keep up with the pace.”

Sometimes it is not only refugee youths who receive additional support—their parents, too, need help to support their children’s educational development while adjusting to life in the U.S. For example, IRC offers intergenerational workshops where parents and students learn how to navigate the public school system together.

But making sure that students and parents are aware of what resources exist is equally important.

“I didn’t know I can go to my [school] counselor any time and talk to her about things that I’m struggling with. I learned that later on when I lived in America for quite a while,” Hamdard said. “Just letting the student know that ‘oh, this is a resource for you, you can go and ask here,’ that’s, I think, a very important thing.”

U.S. schools will likely see hundreds of more students from Afghanistan in the upcoming months as thousands of refugee families are still being processed at military bases abroad.

“I think I’ve had every school district reach out to me specifically, like, ‘hey, can you give us a guesstimate of … how many youths should we be expecting to be coming in and enrolling in our schools,’ and things like that,” Johnson said. But school districts won’t know how many refugee youths they will receive until families are resettled. That uncertainty will have a greater impact on schools that may not already have substantial support resources for refugee youths.

Johnson says his organization is working with school districts to identify and bolster support for schools that need additional help for their refugee students. But how schools meet those expectations ultimately depends on their responsiveness to the arrival of these new students.

“Specifically working with students, you know, I think that it is a partnership,” Johnson said. “The schools are really going to need to be proactive, as they [already] are, to meet this surge.”

Bigg’s killer whales hunting seals along rocky Salish Sea coastline

I happened to get video of them hunting seals near Grandma’s Cove on San Juan Island’s southern coast this summer. I couldn’t say for certain whether they were successful, but they seemed to be, since they appeared to linger just under the surface near this spot for quite a while afterward, as if they were feeding.

For what it’s worth, the Bigg’s orcas are anything but endangered. Their population appears to be healthy and growing. We’re also seeing them a great deal more in the interior waters of the Salish Sea than we used to, in part because we’re seeing residents—who notoriously chase the Bigg’s orcas, who travel in smaller pods, out of their waters—so infrequently.

The other big piece of that puzzle is the great abundance of pinnipeds in the area now, whose population is flourishing along with a bountiful supply of baitfish. That’s drawn more Bigg’s orcas, naturally. There’s a reason that local wags sometimes refer to the harbor seals sunning themselves on haulouts as “rock sausages,” and not just because that’s what they look like. 

The wise scientists I talk with about all this tell me that these are all signs that the oceanic ecosystem here is changing, away from the larger fish like salmon that used to dominate and toward the smaller baitfish that nourish seals and attract humpback whales too. I believe them.

The 4 Types of Luxury Brand Leadership

In my almost 15 years of experience in luxury design, I had the opportunity to meet some of the brightest minds, most talented people and most prolific over-achievers in the industry, and got a good sense of what makes a great leader in its circles. I came across five different types:

1.The entitled one

The Harvard Business Review calls “family gravity” the delicate balance between the uniqueness of a family business and all the critical factors in long-term success”. Such endurance is dependent in part on smooth executive transitions, and governance during and after a family company leadership change is a reliably fraught affair. One leader I encountered inherited his father’s luxury business, and was not a happy example of this type. He encompassed a key role, stood at the center of the organization like the sun in the solar system, but never mastered people management, leadership development or good succession practices. Worse yet, in inheriting the business, he amplified his innate insecurities and low self-confidence. The product of an undisciplined CEO succession, he hadn’t been groomed to lead and was used to ring kissing instead.

Creating a new and refreshed company reality is, unquestionably, a challenge for those from affluent families…  essentially living up to mother’s or father’s standards. It’s common for them to never feel quite free of old company mistakes, but it’s also common for them to never be held accountable for bad decisions. The above-mentioned person never engaged with our team, and progressively disconnected from all key players. Better for the business to have looked elsewhere: A company with gravity and governance can easily attract talent from outside the family.

2. The diva

For chief executive positions in the luxury industry, I’ve found that a ratio of 60% substance to 40% style is a winning one. A leader who is merely efficient but sports no style won’t be able to represent the aesthetic and avant-garde qualities of a brand. But if there is only style and no substance, then the quality of the work is compromised, and its creative team (and customers, most likely) will in time perceive the value of the brand to be diluted. That was my initial experience with this second type — the diva leader — but over time, and in no small way by embracing being coached by a mentor outside the organization, this stylish CEO succeeded.

3. The laissez-faire, laissez-aller leader

If you want to grow professionally, it’s great to come across this type of person. With their built-in attitude of trust, there’s not too much guidance, but instead a zeal for team delegation. I was lucky to work with a CEO that made few decisions and allowed my team to find appropriate solutions instead, largely without consulting him. Since that team was competent, took responsibility, and preferred engaging in individual work, this leadership style made for a successful strategy, but there are risks, of course.

4. The forever salesman

Promising the moon to clients and leaving teams the awful duty of delivering bad news, this type of leader fast loses his credibility inside and outside an organization. By inflating stories and not keeping his word, over time, his reputation deteriorates. Luxury is a small world, and reputation is invaluable, so authenticity and integrity should be at the core of the leadership and management of a brand. There are simply no compromises on that: This sector is a zero-tolerance domain, and if you want to work in it, pedestrian salesman tricks won’t work.

Adhara Pérez, 10, has a higher IQ than Einstein and Hawking. She has her sights set on NASA

Sánchez decided to take her daughter to therapy, and it wasn’t long before the psychiatrist recommended Pérez go to the Center for Attention to Talent (CEDAT), a school for gifted children. 

Sánchez quickly learned that her daughter wasn’t simply gifted, she was a certifiable genius with an IQ of 162—higher than Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. 

The Sánchez family comes from Tláhuac, Mexico, one of the 16 boroughs into which Mexico City is divided. It’s one of the poorest in the city. 

When she was just 5, Pérez finished elementary school. At 6 she finished middle school, and at 8 she finished high school. Today, she’s studying two careers online—Industrial engineering in mathematics at UNITEC and systems engineering at CNCI. The University of Arizona has offered her a scholarship. 

Pérez was invited to study there personally by the university’s president, Robert C. Robbins, who sent her a letter with the news. “I was thrilled to read about your incredible story online and to find out that your dream school is the University of Arizona,” Robbins said in his letter. “We have many outstanding space sciences programs, you would have many opportunities to work side by side with the world’s leading experts … You have a bright future ahead of you, and I hope to welcome you on campus one day as a Wildcat.”

However, with the challenges of the U.S. visa, she hasn’t been able to go.

Forbes magazine named Pérez one of the 100 powerful women of Mexico, and she recently authored a memoir titled Don’t Give Up. 

“The most difficult thing was breaking the stereotype that children with autism cannot and are incapable of achieving things,” Sánchez told The Mazatlan Post.

Pérez says her dream is to work at NASA. “I want to go to space to colonize Mars,” she told Infobae. 

She has even made a keynote presentation at her school on black holes at an event organized by the Institute of Art and Culture in Tijuana.

“If you don’t like where you are, imagine where you want to be, I see myself at NASA, so it’s worth a try” the prodigy wrote on her Instagram page

An autocratic leader, for example, is generally a unilateral decision-maker, while a democratic one encourages input before making decisions. So, whether you aspire to be a person of authority or already are, here are 20 attributes that great ones encompass.

1. Compassion and empathy: When a leader demonstrates these qualities, they earn the respect and loyalty of those around them: it’s that simple.

2. Emphasis on open communication: Leaders should ensure that employees have a voice and a platform for expressing thoughts.

3. Articulates clear expectations: A person in authority has a responsibility to express expectations in a manner which employees can follow, as well as regularly assess process and progress.

4. Always teaches: Most great staff members are made. A great manager recognizes that a critical aspect of their job is to teach and grow employees’ knowledge base. Think of it as akin to banking: You can either stick money in a savings account and watch it grow slowly or invest and see it grow exponentially faster.

5. Inspires others: Inspiration is about engendering creativity, loyalty, dedication and every other positive attribute we want employees to possess.

6. Leads by example: Anyone in a position of authority should hold themselves to the same expectations to which they hold others.

7. Embraces opportunities: Change and challenges can be seen as problematic, but a capable leader embraces them as opportunities to adapt, learn and grow.

8. Fosters creativity: Employees inevitably possess capability resources beyond their assigned tasks. Each one of them has the ability to bring new perspectives and ideas, so encourage that.

9. Encourages feedback: All leaders generally have the final say, but great ones solicit and listen to feedback and take it into consideration before taking action.

10. Empowers others: The best way to grow successfully is to encourage others to constructively contribute — to freely entrust staff members with important tasks, and to solicit innovations from them.

11. Offers transparency: Whether what needs saying is good or bad, a leader offers communication clarity, which engenders trust and loyalty and reduces stress.

12. Takes accountability: No one is perfect and no one should expect perfection from others. Part of being a winning authority figure is owning mistakes.

13. Is authentic: Most people do not want to feel patronized or pandered to. Be yourself and be genuine, and you will inspire others to do the same.

14. Acknowledges effort and results: Recognition is a powerful tool: It sends the message that you see and appreciate the actions of those around you. Every employee is valuable, yes, but each one of them need to told exactly why.

15. Is loyal: From turnover to productivity (or their lack), loyalty manifests itself in many ways, and the best way to foster it is to demonstrate it.

16. Rewards excellence: Superlative work should be a high bar not easy to reach, and for those who do achieve it, there should be a suitable reward.

17. Shares in success: Whether through profit sharing, career advancement or other bonuses or opportunities, when a company experiences success, it should share it with the people responsible for making it possible.

18. Avoids distractions: A great leader has the vision, mission and values that help define a company. If something does not align with or deters from these principles, it should be removed or avoided.

19. Actively listens and observes: We learn by watching and listening, not by talking and directing. Take time every day to fine-tune those managerial antennae.

20. Asks for help: There is likely no better way to make someone feel valued and appreciated than asking them for help. Your humility as a leader in doing so will pay off tenfold. After all, great leadership is not inherent to everyone, and should not be limited to those with power; it is a process that can and needs to be cultivated.

3. Get Fit

Trainers are expensive. Unless, that is, they’re Nike Master Trainers, who offer free, video-guided workouts in the Nike Training Club app (iOSAndroid), which covers all fitness levels and offers plenty of variety.

When you don’t have enough time for a full workout, try J&J Official 7 Minute Workout (iOSAndroid). The app’s name is a bit of a misnomer but in a good way: there are a range of workouts, from seven to 32 minutes each, which were developed by the director of exercise physiology at the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute.

4. Eat Healthier

If you’re concerned about the quality of your food, download Fooducate (iOSAndroid), which gives every food in its database a letter grade for nutrition. If you’re seeking a healthy alternative to favorite splurges, scan a product bar code and the app will offer up suggestions.

The only way to know exactly what you’re eating is to make it yourself. With SparkRecipes (iOSAndroid), you can search the database of over 500,000 recipes to find the ones that fit your taste and nutritional needs. If you’re not skilled in the kitchen, there are video demos and plenty of tips.

Maybe 2019 is the year you go vegan or vegetarian. There are plenty of apps to help you make the adjustment in what and where you eat.

For those with disordered eating, just the thought of food-related New Year’s resolutions can cause anxiety. Rise Up + Recover (iOSAndroid) helps you manage feelings related to food-related issues.

5. Improve Health

It’s a cliche, but your health is everything. But it can be overwhelming to get one clear picture of your medical history. FollowMyHealth (iOSAndroid) is a good place to start for a repository of basic health information, a way to track medical appointments, and a source to share with (and in some cases communicate with) your physicians.

7. Get a Better Job

Mid-winter is when you’re most likely to feel stuck in a rut. One of the best ways to rid yourself of that feeling is to find a new job. LinkedIn (iOSAndroid) lets you manage how employers see you and puts you in touch with colleagues and employers past, present, and future. It also lets you job hunt without tipping off your current boss.

9. Use Time Better

10. Self Improvement and Personal Growth

Therapy is one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself. Yet it can also bring up its own issues such as cost, inconvenience, and even worries about the stigma of seeking help. Fortunately there are many online therapy apps to try that reduce and eliminate some of these concerns.

Meditation is another way to bring more peace to your life amongst chaos. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference and there are apps that let you practice wherever you are, even on that crowded train going nowhere fast.

Playing Against South American Teams Gave Us Confidence Ahead Of Asian Cup: Manisha Kalyan

Indian women’s team forward Manisha Kalyan believes that playing against technically superior sides in South America in the lead-up to the AFC Asian Cup has raised the side’s confidence level ahead of the continental showpiece. Speaking during a live chat with AIFF TV, Manisha delved into the three matches that India had played against Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela a little over a month. “Playing against those sides was truly a unique experience for us. These are teams that have players who are technically more superior to us, and just keeping up with the pace of the games was so incredibly difficult,” said Manisha.

“We had to stick together and fight like one unit, and I think we gave a good account of ourselves in those three games. That gave us a lot of confidence at the end of the day,” she added.

“Now we know that no matter the quality of the opposition that we face, we can all put up a fight together and do well. That spirit of togetherness has really pumped everyone up ahead of the Asian Cup.” Just a day ahead of her 20th birthday, Manisha had scored a memorable goal against Brazil, the first by a woman footballer from India against a top-10 ranked side in the world,” she said.

“It was a special moment, for sure. I have always been a fan of the Brazilian team. I grew up watching Ronaldinho, and Neymar, and Brazil’s style of football has always intrigued me,” said Manisha.

“It was a big moment, but that’s not just the end. The main aim still remains to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. And also I want to keep scoring more goals for my country,” she added.

It has been five months since the Indian team has been training under new head coach Thomas Dennerby, and the forward from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, feels that the attackers in the side have been given a certain level of freedom.

“Ours is not a rigid system, as the coach always wants us to think on our feet and make our own decisions in the attacking third. He guides us in training as to what kind of decisions could be better, but he gives us that freedom of decision making,” she said.

“But that also comes at a cost, which means that we do have to fall back while defending and help out the midfielders,” she added.

“We have shown that we can be a solid unit at the back, and that means that we all need to get behind the ball and close down the spaces,” she said.

Connect! Unite! Act! Household chores do not go away for the holidays

I have to tell you, the task I used to dread the most was cleaning things off of walls. When I had two toddlers years ago—20 years ago, to be exact—the sight of Crayola or pen on a wall would make me cringe. I would stare at it and curse under my breath, thinking: Am I going to have to paint this freaking wall? Suddenly, Magic Eraser and products like it came along and I found that no, I didn’t need to do that!

Wall stick-on art became popular thanks to websites like Etsy. You simply peeled it off of its backing sheet and stuck it to the wall. It looked great! And using it around the holidays made for glossy, nice-looking material. Until you tried to remove early versions of the stickers and found that they pulled paint off if you weren’t exceptionally careful. Later, I discovered the use of a hair dryer or a heat gun at a distance.

Some household chores have never, ever improved. In our new home I no longer have a dishwasher. I hadn’t realized exactly how much I relied on this in my prior experience, but washing dishes at night has become one of those tasks I sit and grimace about, especially as someone who likes to cook frequently. Oh, I’m scrubbing and cleaning measuring cups, stirring spoons, pots, dishes, silverware, coffee cups, glasses. How quickly do I plan to get a dishwasher again? Okay, that one is moving up my priority list.

Taking out trash, vacuuming the floors, caring for the pets and animals—including a currently escaped, free-range hamster that has occupied a spot under a bed and refuses to come back out. Taking care of the lawn, trimming bushes, talking to vendors about taking out a tree, running a new electrical outlet, unclogging a drain, cleaning a pea trap, mopping the floor.

Robot vacuums? Get out of here. When you have mixed flooring, you might as well be screaming into the void with these robots that just get stuck so frequently that you find you might as well just keep picking them up and moving them or use a regular vacuum. I would offer some thoughts on name brands, but I could just say there are some supposed “wonder” vacuums I am really, really unimpressed with.

As a young kid, I had assumed robots or the cool fact of having income as an adult would make adulting the absolute best experience. Make no mistake, adulting is pretty nice. I have no problem saying to myself: I feel like making a specific recipe today and doing it. I enjoy that a lot. Some chores I enjoy as well—wielding a chainsaw is a pretty nice feeling you don’t get as a young kid. 

When I look forward to 2022, I don’t imagine chores are going away for anyone anytime soon. How about you? What chore is your favorite, your least favorite? Is there a household chore that is so enjoyable for you that you never think about it as a chore—for me that’s cooking—and you love it when it pops up? Is there something you dread so significantly you wait until your partner or a child can take it on? In our household, it seems to be: “I spotted a spider, therefore, you will be the one to take care of it.”

4 Trends that Will Reshape the Small Business Landscape in 2022 and Beyond

We all know that in the past two years, the only constant for small business owners has been change. Thousands of businesses changed their business model at the onset of the pandemic, introducing new products or services and embracing new channels to reach their customers. Thousands more launched new businesses altogether, spotting untapped opportunities in our collective “new normal.” 

Now, as we head into 2022, we see the impacts of the past two years crystallizing and new trends emerging, like the beginnings of the metaverse to changing how we define small businesses and how small businesses operate — online, offline and in-between. 

A few weeks ago, I sat down with my colleague Pooja Piyaratna who leads Meta’s Business Product Marketing Group for small businesses. Together, we identified four trends that will reshape the small business landscape in 2022 and beyond.

The evolution of entrepreneurship

One fortunate byproduct of the pandemic was an outpouring of creativity. Around the world, people reexamined previously held assumptions — like the need to conduct some business exclusively in-person — and new, exciting ideas and businesses were born. This effectively redefined what it means to be an entrepreneur, adding more diversity to the small business space. In 2022, this trend will accelerate further as a record number of businesses are forecasted to be started. One of the most interesting evolutions is the increasing frequency we’re seeing creators turn their passion into a living. For example, Emily Delaney, the Cheese Board Queen, started with a humble Instagram showcasing her love of cheese and charcuterie boards in 2019. Now, just three years later, she hosts virtual classes and workshops, partners with brands regularly and has a book coming out with Penguin’s DK Books in the Spring. Her story of sharing a passion online and turning it into a bonafide business is not unique, and one we’ll only see more of in the future.

The art and science of creativity

Over the last two years, small business owners have had no choice but to become increasingly creative with their digital presence. And for many, this opened new doors for driving sales and building their brand in the process. Live Shopping is a great example of a digital technology that has helped businesses showcase their offerings while also infusing their brand’s unique personality into an online experience. And for many, the beauty of fun live video combined with the convenience of online shopping has opened up new revenue streams that will persist beyond the pandemic.

Consider Illinois boutique owner Kelley Cawley, who credits regular streams on Facebook Live with making her customers more engaged than ever, driving more online and in-person traffic to her store. To make Live Shopping a success, Kelley mixes the art of a fun Live experience with the science of digital tools and insights that help her understand what keeps her customers engaged. In fact, Crawley knows her sales have jumped 88% since she’s implemented the Live Shopping strategy. Combining the art of creativity and the understanding digital tools provide of what drives the most success enables businesses like Crawley’s to experiment, innovate and make strategic decisions based on real data. In 2022, we can expect businesses that have found a home online to experiment further  — combining the art of creativity with data science tools — ultimately discovering the strategies that work best for them.

Messaging paves the way for the next era of communication

Another interesting development is how businesses are using messaging to infuse personalization into their customer communications. People’s preferences for how they want to talk with companies are evolving. In this digital era, 75% of adults globally say they want to communicate with businesses via messaging, in the same way they communicate with friends and family. As we transition from the mobile Internet to the Metaverse, we know we’ll see businesses large and small working with more immersive formats to forge personal connections online. While this may sound far off, the groundwork is already underway. For example, small businesses can now conduct video calls via Messenger, allowing them to speak and see their customer, helping them to answer questions faster, provide better customer service, and of course, truly connect person-to-person.

Bridging the physical/digital divide

Many businesses are now operating in a hybrid model — meaning they’re maintaining a physical presence while also selling via ecommerce platforms that became a necessity during the pandemic. In a way, we see the pandemic having accelerated what ‘digital’ actually means, and as a result, there is no longer a binary divide between online or offline or digital and non-digital. Take Akila McConnell, owner of Unexpected Walking Tours in Atlanta as an example. Prior to the Pandemic, Akila’s business provided walking tours focused on Black History in Atlanta. When the pandemic hit, she lost 100% of her revenue overnight. Akila pivoted online to sell gift boxes on Facebook and Instagram Shop that represented the best Atlanta had to offer and introduced virtual tours — bridging her physical offering with a new online experience. Figuring out how to balance and maintain both in-person and digital experiences, and infusing the two experiences together will ensure small businesses are reaching the largest possible customer base, not restricting them based on their geographical footprint, while also providing the convenience that local customers desire.

Despite all the changes and innovations we’ve seen over the past few years and that lie ahead in 2022, some things remain the same. The ability to watch, listen and connect with your customers will always be paramount to small business success, and now digital tools make this easier than ever.
