Indian cinemas are finally heaving a sigh of breath and how! After the largest dry spell with the doors of theatres sealed shut during the COVID-19 pandemic, cinegoers are finally returning back to the sanctum sanctorum. In fact, recently the Maharashtra government has also okayed the reopening of the theatres in the state that waited a while to do so. And by doing so, rightly reviving Bollywood and filmmaking where the craft has become synonymous to the place. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took to Twitter to announce that cinemas will open up from October 22 and it’s raining movies. From Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi to Ranveer Singh’s ‘83, it is an assortment of sorts.
And like that was not enough, now, a big Bollywood debut is on the cards too! If you haven’t heard already, boxing icon Mike Tyson is all set to grace the Indian screens for the first time as he has come aboard Karan Johar’s Liger. Nicknamed ‘Iron Mike’ and ‘Kid Dynamite’ in his early career, and later known as ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’, Tyson has been roped in for the sports action film which stars Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday in the lead roles. Johar took to social media to share the big news and wrote, “For the first time ever, the king of the ring will be seen on the big screens of Indian cinema! Welcoming @MikeTyson to the #LIGER team! #NamasteTyson.”

Even Deverakonda chimed in and added, “We promised you Madness! We are just getting started 🙂 For the first time on Indian Screens. Joining our mass spectacle – #LIGER The Baddest Man on the Planet The God of Boxing The Legend, the Beast, the Greatest of all Time! IRON MIKE TYSON #NamasteTYSON.” And so did Ananya Panday!
Reportedly, Mike Tyson has a significant role in Liger which revolves around mixed martial arts. It is also being said that Liger will also feature several foreign fighters in the movie. In fact, it isn’t too far-fetched to think that maybe we will finally see Tyson in the ring, dishing out knockout punches.
Fans were already excited for the film with ‘saala crossbreed’ as its tagline as it’s a pan-India project that also marks the Telugu star’s Bollywood debut. Written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, and produced by Dharma Productions and Puri Connects. The actor plays a fighter with a stutter and has undergone intense mixed martial arts training in Thailand. He will obviously be seen romancing Ananya Panday for the first time. The film also stars Ronit Roy and Ramya Krishnan in pivotal roles. And while it was earlier scheduled for a September 9 release, it was delayed owing to the pandemic.
Liger is now up for a pan-India theatrical release and will be released in five languages– Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
